Storage comes from the Old French word for store, estorer, meaning "build, supply". As it was connected with building, it might have meant the construction materials like brick, wood, steel and whatever part materials were used in creating commercial or home buildings during that time. To assure its supply when required, it needed to be kept in some sort of a storage room or warehouse or obtained from a local supplier.
In modern use, the term is applied to keeping something, usually for future retrieval and use. It might be money or other valuables like diamonds and dear jewelry safely deposited in individual safety deposit boxes or the vault for general use in a bank for a certain charge covered with a contract. Monetary deposits generally earn interest as it may be employed by the bank for business. Warehouses offer similar services particularly for commercial product under a rental or leasehold agreement. Warehouses of shipping and transport companies offer security for cargoes and cargo not yet claimed by consignees or owners. A storage charge is levied for long-term storage.
Family and private possessions are domestically stored in cabinets which may overflow in the longer term. It's common and smart for folks to sort things out when our local storage bins overflow, chucking away the ones that are not serviceable but earning some cash on other products that can still be sold in a garage sale.
