Top Gifts Under $50 for Horseless Horse Lovers - Yahoo! Voices - voices.yahoo.com

What do you get for someone who loves horses but doesn't have one? Perhaps you aren't in the "horsey" set or perhaps you are trying to find something different for a relative who loves horses but doesn't have room for one. There is a wide variety of possibilities - I've kept this guideline under $50, with many under $25.

Breyer horses have long been a popular choice for young horse enthusiasts as well as adults. From the small "stablemate" ones to the larger "classic" and "traditional" they are more than a toy. There's also plush horses, paint your own and other items available. Model collecting has never been more popular - with an active community that outfits them with equipment, stables and shows them. There are limited editions and some that are available only at certain outlets, such as Southern States or JC Penneys. There's "just horses" such as the Arabian stallion as well as movie horses (Flicka, the Black Stallion, Hidalgo) and real life horses (Barbaro, Seabiscuit, Slew, Secretariat and many more). There's solid colored bays and appaloosa, pintos and more. There's buckskins and greys, jumpers and barrel racers. For the collector who has all of them (very unlikely!) you can research online and find some that have been repainted,Wholesale Earring, repositioned and are completely unique one of a kind but those go beyond the $50 limit here. If you are low on money and have talents, create customized stables, fencing and other realistic looking equipment. A cut piece of "astroturf" makes a grassy "pasture" for model horses, or small amounts of other footing to give a realistic look to displays.

Riding lessons is always a way to give time with horses as well as teach good early habits. Riding instructors can be found at feed and tack stores (check bulletin boards) or asking around in your area.

Magazine subscriptions are long popular - don't overlook those not on most newsstands. Western Horseman, Horse and Rider, Performance Horseman are easy to find but there's also magazines put out by most breed organizations and many regional ones. If the person you're shopping for expresses an interest in Appaloosas, give a gift subscription to the Appaloosa Journal. Most of the breed organizations can be found and contacted online. If a youth member consider a membership in and subscription to the "POA" club and magazine - which is tailored strongly towards youth.

Prints and photos are another idea, with an assortment of famous horses available at Exclusively Equine's site - get photographs of Kentucky Derby winners both on and off the track as well as other horses. The Blood Horse also has many available of current names like Barbaro and Lost In The Fog as well as past stars like Precisionist, Man O War and Spectacular Bid. These are usually about $20 for an 8X10 print or 11X14 for about $40. For those with a bigger budget many can be had as large as 20X30 for around $140. Photographs of great horses are a collector item as well as a treasured possession for horse fans.

The Bloodhorse also has a series of "Legends" - books featuring champions like Affirmed, John Henry, Forego and many more - available at the website with many titles at around $10 each. They are also found in many retail outlets, such as Barnes & Noble. Biographies of horses such as Secretariat, Native Dancer or Citation are popular, as are historical books about different breeds. There's a wide variety to suit many ages.

Lap blankets, throws and other items with horses on it are another popular item with many designs and colors available for $30-40. There are general horse themes as well as racing, reining and much more.

Silver is a hit with many - with a variety of bracelets, earrings and other items (as well as other gift items!) available under $50. Silver heart shaped earrings trimmed in gold are on their website for $36 - simple but elegant with a Western touch.

Some ideas if you have crafty talents - or know someone who does: clocks, bookends or business card holders with horse motif; CD holder welded from horse shoes and a host of other items.
